De zes meter hoge IJsbeer tuurt rustig in de verte terwijl hij met een flinke kletterstraal in het Alkmaars Kanaal staat te plassen. Het is een komisch tafereel, maar achter de humoristische façade levert het kunstwerk scherpe kritiek op onze omgang met de natuur. De ijsbeer, symbool voor klimaatverandering, wordt getoond in een nonchalante alledaagse pose. Door een bedreigde diersoort zo menselijk af te beelden, confronteert kunstenaar Florentijn Hofman ons met de gevolgen van ons handelen. De beer "plast" als het ware terug in onze leefomgeving, een verwijzing naar hoe de mensheid de natuurlijke habitat van deze dieren vervuilt en vernietigt.

The six-meter-tall polar bear gazes calmly into the distance while releasing a powerful stream of urine into the Alkmaar Canal. At first glance, it's a humorous scene—but behind the comedic façade lies a sharp critique of how we treat nature. The polar bear, a well-known symbol of climate change, is depicted in a casual, everyday pose. By portraying this endangered species in such a human-like way, artist Florentijn Hofman confronts us with the consequences of our actions. The bear is, in a sense, “peeing back” into our environment—a reference to how humanity pollutes and destroys the natural habitats of animals like this one.
